Your First Visit

Before your first acupuncture appointment:

You will be asked to complete a comprehensive online intake form. The acupuncture intake form asks questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. These questions are important because the holistic approach of Chinese medicine takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything that happens to them leaves its mark.

Please try to eat a light meal or a snack before your appointment, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

At your appointment:

You and your practitioner will discuss your condition, the information on your forms, and any other concerns or questions you have.

Your practitioner will examine your pulse and tongue, which are two of the basic diagnostic methods of Chinese medicine.

You’ll be asked to disrobe to your comfort level and get on the treatment table. If you’d rather keep clothes on, please wear loose, comfortable clothes.

The acupuncture points chosen will depend on your condition, but you can expect approximately 12-25 needles. Once the needles are inserted, you will lie comfortably for about 30 minutes with the needles in place. Many people find acupuncture treatment deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.

Most New Patient Appointments will include a “reset” treatment while you lay on the table face down, as well as a second set of needles tailored to your condition while you lay face up. The table can be contoured and adjusted so that you are comfortable no matter what position you are in.

After your appointment:

You can return to work or your normal schedule, but please refrain from any high intensity exercise. Try to take it easy for the next day or so, even if you’re feeling great. Make sure to drink plenty of water to help flush out any toxins.

You may feel some soreness in the spots we worked on, or at needle sites. Swelling or bruising at needle sites is possible but not common.
